After a truce ends the Civil War, America fractures into six independent nations. To prevent further conflict, a sweeping mandate is enforced: erase cultural traditions, suppress ancestral heritage, and require the blending of racial identities in the name of unity.

Told in dual timelines and multiple points of view, What We Are follows two girls—centuries apart—as they bravely question what they’ve been taught to believe.
